Each of our 17 tenpin bowling centres has a minimum of 20 lanes, a licensed bar, a Diner and an up to date games arcade area. This combination of fun, facilities, team members and service make AMF Bowling the obvious choice when it comes to choosing a leisure activity for a great day or night out.

Our History

The overall history of AMF Bowling stretches back over 100 years to New Jersey, where American Machine and Foundry was established. In 1947, the first automatic pinspotter for use in tenpin bowling was created and AMF International Limited launched the UK's first commercial bowling centre, which opened in Stamford Hill, North London on 20th January 1960.
The bowling boom of the 1960s saw various operators become involved with tenpin bowling and approximately 130 bowling centres opened in the UK. AMF Bowling established its UK headquarters in Coventry and, between 1967 and 1970, AMF Bowling UK acquired its first 15 centres.

In 1983, AMF Bowling modernised its 20 lane centre in Hemel Hempstead, with the UK's first computerised scoring system. AMF Bowling continued its refurbishment programme throughout the rest of the decade and, as interest grew among other leisure operators and potential investors, new centres opened in 1998 in the UK for the first time in almost 20 years.
Goldman Sachs & Co, purchased AMF Bowling worldwide in 1996 and throughout 1997 the number of centres owned and operated by AMF Bowling in the UK rose from 15 to 37. In 2004, AMF Worldwide elected to sell the UK branch of the business and the company was acquired by certain shareholders of Bourne Leisure, one of the UK's largest leisure groups.

The popularity of bowling continued to grow, so that by 2004, there were 322 centres in the UK, of which AMF Bowling operated 33 centres and had moved its headquarters from Coventry to Hemel Hempstead. Since 2005, AMF Bowling has embarked on another programme of refurbishment and AMF Wellingborough received the Tenpin Bowling Proprietors Association award for the Best modernised/refurbished centre of the year 2005.

Since 2007, AMF Bowling has opened five new centres in the UK, with the most recent being AMF Bury in July 2010. In August 2010, AMF Bowling aquired Hollywood Bowl. Under the umbrella name 'The Original Bowling Company',  AMF Bowling's 17 centres and Holllywood Bowl's 25 centres have come together to become the UK's larger tenpin bowling operator.
